In space delta-v is used to calculate fuel requirements. On a map of land we usually use distance, rate, time, and fuel easily. Since everything is moving distance doesn’t really matter. Think of delta-v as ‘space distance’. It makes it a lot easier to understand without having to learn all the math. Be careful, high delta-v numbers can mean that it is not possible. For example, 10 km/s will require something that is made of about 90 percent fuel. Check out Figure 3 for the relationship between Delta-V and Fuel. Click the image for a larger version.
